I used to despise the flavour of vegetables. Specifically Kale and Celery, I would literally want to vomit just thinking about it. It turns out, I am not the only one who has had this experience. A few years later when I went vegan and began to explore new recipes. I would throw together the most random foods (like combining pickles with ketchup or apple cider vinegar with peppermint, etc.) and came up with a few ways to make vegetables not just more bearable for my consumption, but so delicious that I now can’t go a single day with some type of salad in my day.
Here are two significant mistakes that I had made while
1. I was not applying salad dressing.
It’s true, vegetables have a bland flavour. Especially if we are eating more flavourful food with more carbs and fats in them, of course our taste buds will not recognize the neutral, low carb flavour of vegetables to be extraordinary. This is why it is important to apply at least some kind of salad dressing to them before we make a flavour judgement. Vegetables happen to now be the food that I would be capable of eating copious amounts of. Would you believe me when I say I can’t go a single day without eating one large salad?
2. I was eating them AFTER my main course.
Evidently, after we fill up our hungry stomach with flavourful, calorie dense foods, no wonder something low calorie, that contains roughly 70% water will taste somewhat bland. I absolutely hated that. But had I tried eating it on an empty stomach? Of course, there is a saying “anything tastes good on an empty stomach”, and maybe that is the secret to learning how to love foods that aren’t currently our favourite.
(This is also the perfect way to strengthen our digestion! Eating raw fruits and vegetables before calorie dense cooked foods optimizes absorption!)
I worry that many others who say they dislike the flavour of vegetables may have a similar situation: they are eating them totally wrong! Today I am sharing a recipe with you that my taste buds can not help but dance for!
You will need:
- 1 Cup of Kale
- 1/2 Apple
- 1/4 Cup Walnuts
- 1/4 Onion
Slice up all these ingredients!
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Nutritional Yeast
Place into a blender and blend!
Mix together and you have yourself the most delicious salad ever. Enjoy!
